Malfeitona is an artist involved in scientific research and dissemination. She holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Instituto Federal Bahia, a master’s degree in communication and technology from UFBA, a postgraduate degree in higher education teaching and is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in digital journalism.
Between jobs, internships and scientific initiation, she worked for 7 years in the engineering field, published articles, book chapters, presented papers at international conferences and received a scholarship from Ciência Sem Fronteiras to complete a one-year master’s program in biomedical engineering at Linköping University in Sweden. She has worked for large companies such as Petrobrás in Brazil and Hoerbiger in Austria. She still maintains good relations with her former research group in composite and polymeric materials and with her former advisor and one of her main professional inspirations, Professor Dr. Mirtania Leão.
After transitioning professionally to an artistic career, Malfeitona did not abandon academic life. On the contrary: fascinated by how digital platforms and social networks change society, she scientifically investigated this phenomenon during her Master’s in Communication and Technology in the renowned PósCom program, UFBA. Her object of study was the algorithms of digital platforms and how they permeate society, especially in the work area. During her master’s degree, Malfeitona presented her research at conferences, was an intern (a kind of “intern teacher”) in the subject of communication and technology in the communication, journalism and cultural production courses at UFBA (under the supervision of Prof. Dr. André Lemos). She also created, in 2020, the character Dona Algo, the “algorithm” of digital platforms. Dona Algo was created to democratize knowledge about how algorithms work and even participated in events and podcasts.
